Our players covered up many of the mistakes that BVG did. And his entire time here we've never truly had a good pass rush. I'd say that the entire Dline regressed this last year. We did stop a lot of points and didn't do terrible against the run, but BVG was not what won those games. I prefer BVG over MM because he did more with less, and our record and game by game performances showed this. Care to show me all the mistakes BVG made that our players covered? |

Isn't Nolan main defense a 3-4? Why force him to do a 4-3 with a mix of 3-4?

I'd prefer that we went to a 3-4 straight up since that is what Nolan is most familiar with, or at the very least a 3-4 base with 4-3 and 4-6 mixed in. I assume we are staying 4-3 b/c that is what Smith wants and is familiar with and since Smith is a stubborn piece of shit that hates to progress he wont let Nolan have the reigns completely. Actually a bit surprised Nolan agreed to be DC where he couldn't use the scheme he likes to run. We may see a heavier reliance on 3-4 in 2013 after we have more time to add the right guys, buy this is all just conjecture. |

Or, and I'm just spitballing here, we have a lot of contract money tied up in strictly 4-3 players and don't want to start over on defense, so we'll slowly build toward a 3-4 rather than just rebuilding one side of the ball. |

Mike Nolan has ran a 4-3 many times before, and usually in some sort of hybrid scheme. He ran a 4-3 and/or 4-3 hybrid when he coordinated for the Giants, Redskins, and Ravens(where he worked with Smith), and his later years as the 49ers head coach. |

I'm still not convinced on this mike Smith is conservative Rhetoric. He may be a traditionalist and he may make decisions unpopular against the curve or fashionable trends, but in all honesty I don't see him as a control freak tsar like character. The guy keeps himself out of the limelight so it's not like he wants to run and dominate the show for glory and credit.
If fans ran the NFL there would be no NFL |

I love ignoring things, neat! |

We have Peters who doesn't fit, Jerry who REALLY doesn't fit (though to be fair, Jerry could probably be cut regardless of what we run), Babineaux doesn't fit, Spoon and Nick aren't ideal for that system, etc. Spoon is athletic enough to run whatever we want, I'll grant you, but Nicholas isn't. Walker isn't going to translate well. Bierman and Sid are too small to be DEs in the 3-4 and not good enough in coverage to be OLBs. I'm not saying we'll NEVER run a 3-4. I'm just saying it won't be our base this season. Whether that changes or not remains to be seen. |

I love ignoring things, neat! Go back and do your research Math. He is a premier 34. But he is primarily a Multi guy. All his Defenses have had 43 elements but not all have had 34. Baltimore was and is still a multi with a predominant 43 alignment. San Fran he ran the hybrid but it was more 34 before it reverted to a 43 then back to 34 again. Miami he started them off as a 43 hybrid before taking them into the 34 this year. Nolan is versatile. If he didn't think it could be done or didn't want to compromise he wouldn't take it. Fact is we are running a multi which means we will see combinations with the philosophies behind multiple Defenses underpinning a variety of looks to standard fronts. Even if we are going 34 is it not best to make a 2 to 3 year transition into it permanently rather than trying to force a square peg into a round hole and getting it wrong. |
