ESPN: With weapons, Koetter can succeed
With weapons, Koetter can succeed
January, 15, 2012 12:38 PM ET By Paul Kuharsky Mike Mularkey traded up, getting a top job with less talent as he went from offensive coordinator in Atlanta to coach in Jacksonville. His replacement with the Falcons is Dirk Koetter, who was the Jaguars' offensive coordinator. Koetter was a relatively hot prospect a year ago, interviewing for the Denver job that John Fox got, and coveted by St. Louis for an open offensive coordinator post. I was asked to assemble a staff out of all of the AFC South coaches, and with so many uncertain head coaches to choose from, I took Koetter as my top guy. A miserable season later, his stock isn’t the same. But he’s not the one who put together a group that had one legitimate NFL receiver in Mike Thomas, or who gave a big contract to Marcedes Lewis, whose play dropped off considerably. Calling plays for Matt Ryan throwing to Roddy White, Julio Jones and Tony Gonzalez , Koetter will be in heaven. Given the rosters right now, no one would say Mularkey's coordinator, Bob Bratkowski, has a better gig than Koetter. I think he’s a good coach who was in a bad situation. I just tried to settle some panic as a guest on an Atlanta radio station. I’m not sure who Falcons fans wanted, but they should give Koetter a chance. He could well be great. http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/...an-succeed |

RE: ESPN: With weapons, Koetter can succeed
aint this a goddamn change of attitude from 5 years ago. used to espn would write about our hirings as if corky were running the team, and in certain cases he might've. now espn is trying to console an entire fanbase and team that well they really don't give a fuck about. still interesting change of scenery.

What is success? Mularkey had "success" here. I want a hire that can get us over the top, win in the playoffs. No one has shown me any evidence that he has success in big games. Sorry he's going to have to prove me wrong to get my support of this hire. I'll be thrilled to be wrong.

That article was from the AFC South blog. I think it's a pretty good sign when ESPN's AFC South blogger goes out of his way to write a piece about a coach who is no longer in the AFC South. |

Pat Y posted a similar "Calm Down Falcon Fans" article earlier. I dont care what the media pundits say, this guy hasnt proven anything in the NFL. He might be a good guy, a decent Coordinator, but we already had a decent Coordinator with Mularkey. We need an Excellent Coordinator.

What success had Mike Martz achieved before becoming the creator of the GSOT? What success had Joe Philbin achieved before coordinating six consecutive top 10 offenses? I bet I could come up with at least five more examples similar to the two above if I were inclined to do a little research. Everybody starts somewhere. |

Should go back and read Packers fans comments when they hired him, they said he's a capable coach... at maybe Temple. They also called him the most incompetent offensive doofus in football. Kind of funny, the reactions of the fans. |

This Is a job that any candidate would kill for and we rewarded failure. This isn't a rebuild this is an established team and we are expecting someone who has literally done nothing in big games to get us over the top. It's a stupid, unnecessary, shortsighted risk. I hope I'm dead wrong, and I will be he first to admit I was, but it's how I feel. We blew an opportunity to go to the next level. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3CXS04cy...re=related |
