Did Sean Payton disrespect the Falcons by keeping Brees in?
Did Sean Payton disrespect the Falcons by keeping Brees in? <-- Story link
NEW ORLEANS – Under normal football circumstances, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton admitted he probably wouldn't be passing late with his team up 38-16. But he said there was nothing routine about Monday night's scenario that saw QB Drew Brees complete three passes on the Saints' final drive ending with his nine-yard touchdown to Darren Sproles that broke Dan Marino's single-passing record of 5,084 yards in 1984. CAPTION By John Russell, AP Brees completed 23 of 39 attempts for four touchdowns, two interceptions and 307 yards, giving him 5,087 with one game to play. In the post-game press conference, Payton addressed the issue before he was even prompted by reporters. "Typically, would I be throwing there? The answer would be probably no," Payton said. "In fact, the answer is, 'I wouldn't be,' but I thought it was appropriate to get (the record) and we did it. "I just thought we got to that point in the game where we were 30 yards out (from the record)," adding that he had a "ton of respect" for Atlanta and coach Mike Smith. But the Falcons weren't ready to move on afterwards. Some players complained anonymously to CBS columnist Pete Prisco, who wrote that Payton's decision to go for the record tainted Brees' historic night. If they feel slighted, they could have a shot at revenge, with the possibility that New Orleans and Atlanta could meet again in the wild card round. What do you think? This in an online story from USA Today with an open poll. Here is the question: Should Payton have kept Brees in the game to get the record? Here are the choices: Yes. Quit whining Falcons. Yes. The feat required a grand stage. No. Could have waited for the final week. No. No need to disrespect the Falcons. This is a national poll. You can check it out and see how it is seen by sports fans in general. Saints Fan Since 1967

That is Pete Prisco for you. He is the same "columnist" that made up that story about the Saints' defensive linemen "pissing on the logo" after the game last year. Saints Fan Since 1967

No, papa, the point isn't that Falcons players said anything. I believe most, if not all, understood and it was cooked up by Prisco. What upsets me is that some members here have such an issue with it. I have come to like most all of the members here and simply would like to see some understand. Saints Fan Since 1967

I don't have an issue with it at all. We should have stopped them if we didn't want him to break the record.

So it goes from "an anonymous player" making statements that weren't even whiny, to multiple anonymous players complaining?
Try harder media. |

I guess I am addressing the vocal minority. It just gets my goat how things like that set off some people. I guess I'm just getting old and the games are getting soft. Hell, I remember when I was playing ball you could chatter. Now the umpires in youth aqnd even older leagues today won't allow it. I guess I am fighting a losing battle against an isolated force.
