A planned sub-package last year for us last year involved Dunta sliding into the NB position. We didn't have the CB depth(ahem, Owens) to make it happen though.

That was just talk. A high profile CB like Dunta plays on the island. He never was intended to play nickel standing on the sideline.

Like our fullback, he'd have been the highest paid nickel in the league.

that's why it's a SUB-package...as in a substitution in a certain package...he would still play on the outside, but when we showed our nickel package, we would've put him on the inside.

Only if the #1 WR was playing in the slot which hardly ever happens. Dunta never played nickel last season unless,...okay,...it was a sub-package defensive scheme so now I'm gonna have to go back to see if Dunta ever played the nickel.

Maybe I'm talking about base formation mainly and maybe in a blitz package the safeties rolled over to cover the WRs and Dunta went inside to the nickel. But 99% of the time Dunta was on the island.

Oh yeah,...both the safeties in Van Gorder's defense are interchangable. Maybe it seemed Dunta was playing nickel when he was still on the #1.

I do not recall any talk about Dunta ever playing nickel back.

Dunta never went to NB last year because we didn't trust our back-up CBs to play on an island. It was supposed to take advantage of his run support and pass rushing ability, but it was scrapped do to the play of Owens and Jackson.

Dunta never played #1 CB last year either. He played on the RCB position exclusively, which puts him to the QBs left. Grimes was the #1 CB all year long.

Dunta played pretty well in coverage. He didn't make any big plays, at all really, but he did well in coverage. And for him to come out and still say he needs to play better, that's great! That's what I like to hear out of a guy who played decent last season,s tep up and play GREAT
