RE: Chopping Block article
Either way, it's hard to imagine Turner being here next year. Dude hasn't done much of anything up to this point. I'd love to see him return to old form, but it just doesn't look good on that front. We won't get someone in FA. That just won't happen. Too much money trying to sign one of those off that list. The draft is where we will be looking for a new RB.

RE: Chopping Block article
I think another thing to look at is, we want to remain balanced. Teams need to know that we can run on them at any time despite the fact that we have a passing game that is hard to defend. The moment your offense has an imbalance that gives team's an opportunity to sell out on your strength to force you into using your weakness the game gets harder, confidence starts to stutter and it gets sloppy out there.
Whether that runner is turner or someone else we already have or a future draft pick we have to posses that threat to the opposition Defenses. That would make our 11 personnel most effective. I personally would be looking for a runner who comes from a one back system in college because that looks like the best match to what we want to do. Spread the defense out and have the liberty to rush or pass from that set and both be an equal threat. |

RE: Chopping Block article
It's hard to pin this all on Turner. None of our backs are running particularly well.
Its interesting to note that the top two rushers right now were undrafted (Foster) and a sixth rd pick (Morris) |

I think 3/4 down is fine to get a back with a decent track record. Look at where we got quizz. I still think he could be our number one if not part of a bigger 1 2 punch like in Houston. I still believe getting a back who has played in a one back offense is our best bet someone who is used to running without help. |

RE: Chopping Block article
I think it'll be sooner than the 4th round. I would not be surprised if we picked up a DE with the first pick and traded up so we can get 2 picks in the second round so we can get a RB and TE early.
1. DE - Demontre Moore - Texas A&M; Dion Jordan - Oregon; Sylvester Williams - North Carolina 2a. TE - Tyler Eifert - Notre Dame; Joseph Fauria - UCLA; Dion Simms - Mich State 2b. RB - Le'Veon Bell - Mich State; Montee Ball - Wisconsin; Eddie Lacy - Alabama Although I will say this... those are all big RB's, like Turner. 215-240 lbs. And i'm not so sure we need to go that route. Mike Smith really seems to think Quizz can be a between the tackles 3-down RB. And if that's the case, he may go for an ultra-pure speed back. Like a 4.3x instant hit the hole at top end lightning fast speed back. Although I'm still on the fence about that too because I think Antone Smith is already that kind of back and we simply don't use him. One thing I do know, is Turner just isn't coming close to making it to the line before the holes close up. If he stands closer to the line to start, he doesn't have the vision to find the holes, and if he stands far back (which is what he does), he can't make it to the line before the holes close. He is not a "threat" any more. I should never feel like this about our RB. I should be thinking at all times, that if a hole opens up, our RB can break a big play. I use to feel that with Turner and I simply don't any more. And that's the sign for me. I wish Quizz was faster too. The difference with Quizz, however, is that I do feel he's shifty enough to help us move the ball when needed. He doesn't fall down the instant he's touched, he picks his feet up and breaks arm-tackles and squirms out of problems to get possitive yardage. I don't think he's a threat to break a 60 yard TD, however, which is another reason why I don't like him as the KR. I like him as the KR because he doesn't fumble the ball and he can get us over the 20 yard line for better than normal field position much of the time. That said, I really would like to see Antone smith actually play a full game and get 15+ touches and see what he can do with a first-team OL in front of him. That, or draft someone early next year who gives me that feeling like he's a sure thing in the NFL. Like Doug Martin made me feel last year. For some reason, I just had a feeling that guy was going to be a good NFL RB. I get that sense from Eddie Lacy (Bama) and Kenjon Barner (Oregon) this year. I think those guys are NFL ready already. We got to do something though. That 4th quarter, trying to run out the clock running the ball... that was ugly UGLY damn football on our part. We needed to run it, they knew it, we knew it, yet would didn't even come remotely close. I mean not a chance in hell we were going to come close to a first down running 3 straight runs, and that's really bad. |
