This is just analyzing two guys.

The Falcons LB aren't good in coverage. Weatherspoon is OK but he missed a chunk of time last year.

Obviously, the nickelbacks didn't play great.

DeCoud was......frankly terrible last year.

All of that is the reason the pass defense stats are pretty mediocre.

i like nicholas' ability in coverage, i like his fire, tenacity, and striking ability.

But there's plenty of reason for optimism here. Lofton's knees are better and it shows, Weatherspoon is healthy, and the overall speed with Nicholas starting ahead of Peterson is much improved.

Owens and Franks remain uninspiring, but Kelvin Hayden may solve that problem.

I could never figure out DeCoud last year - was he always playing soft because of scheme or out of fear. The one sure thing was that his angles were consistently bad. If he can build on his 2009 form, I'll be happy. If he doesn't, he's nicely backstopped by James Sanders, even if Sanders experience is mostly at SS.

Not really surprising at all if you follow pro football focus's detailed stats on the Falcons D. The D-line graded out with a high number of pressures last year compared to the rest of the league (somewhere are 7th-8th overall) and the starting corner's graded really well also. The biggest problem in pass defense was the linebackers and safeties in coverage according to them. Almost all of them had a negative grade in pass coverage except for Stephen Nicholas. None of the linebackers really did a good job blitzing either. The linebackers and safeties really have to step it up for the Falcons to have a top notch defense this year. Especially Weatherspoon and Decoud.
