A rookie TE won't make a difference to our offense. We already have playmakers on offense, we need QB protection. We need to draft a tackle and maybe a center. But tackle is the #1 priority.
I honestly thought Svitek did a great job as a backup coming in. He wasn't perfect by any means, but he did out play Baker.

I would hate it if we traded up for a TE, any TE. The only positions that are worth trading up in our situation are OL and hybrid DE/OLB for 3-4 looks.

Remember when we traded a 1st round pick for Reggie Kelly. Dan Reeves you magnificent bastard.

A lot of these guys I'm not very impressed with and I'm starting to think Atlanta isn't either, so hopefully the guy they want falls to them and with a lot of OL still on the board it's possible one falls to us, but I wouldn't be shocked if we don't go OL in the 2nd round and pick a TE. You know why? This is a copy cat league. The 2 TE scheme is becoming more popular. Not to mention we are going to need someone to step in after Tony G leaves. They don't have to be a playmaker. I'm still leaning TE and going with Dwayne Allen. He's not a huge playmaker but he's a solid TE, and he also run blocks well. A well rounded player. That's how I'm leaning right now unless a LT that shouldn't be there drops. And we should not even entertain the idea of trading up unless there is some clear cut guy we truly want and I don't see that guy. This draft overall this year is mad weak. Hell I think it's more likely we trade down and snag an extra pick in the process.

I will vomit if we pick a TE before an OT. Gonzo will play all year. With HD's speed it's kinda stupid to remove him from the lineup and replace him with another TE.
Though it would be nice for Gonzo to be around to train his replacement, it is not a necessity. We have Svitek and Baker at LT and you think TE is more important? smh

I didn't say it was more important but you don't draft a position and take a really average player just because you need an OL. That's not smart business and isn't maximizing the value with your pick. A lot of these OL we'll be looking at are projects with very low ceilings to begin with. I don't want to waste a pick on someone who is going to be a stop gap OL and not a long term solution. We already have that with Will.
We're also behind the 8 ball. A lot of what the teams in front of us do will dictate our strategy. By the time our pick gets close I think all of us will have a much better of idea of the direction the pick needs to go.

Why is there this idea that Gonzo want's to train his replacement? During his long career has any receiver claimed to have benefited from watching him catch footballs? KC was trying to move him for two years before we got him. They never got a better TE.

^ They didn't exactly try to plan for life without him either. You don't have to train your replacement, that's not how it has to work. A future replacement can just as easily learn and develop by watching how Tony carries himself on and off the field. His diet, workout routine, practice routine, etc. All of these things are something a kid can pick up on and learn from if he takes the initiative. It doesn't have to come from Tony.
Aaron Rodgers even said Brett Favre wasn't hands on with him and didn't exactly train or groom him, but Rodgers also doesn't deny he didn't learn a lot sitting behind Favre by just watching and picking up on things.

Yea, that's the whole thing right there. Learn by watching but I doubt few NFL players mentor young ones. |
