BVG's defense right now plays the pass very passively - we take away the 30+ yd passes but the corners are sitting ducks for an accurate short passer of the football.

Picture this: You run a 4.5/40 and I run a 4.45/40 - I get 10yds to run as fast as I can toward you while you are squatting but standing still - then I break to the right/to the left or some other way - instantly I have a 5 yard cushion against you.

I don't think any cover corner would look that great the way we defend. Bump/run corners can defend the short passes but playing 10yds off the line does not work - throw in an anemic pass rush - and there you go.

they do line up in press man sometimes, and whey they do they're usually pretty successful (that's when passes usually go to the middle), but when dunta is on the LOS and grimes is off, or vice versa, the ball will usually go to the side where the man is playing 10 yds off.

i started of the year feeling pretty good about BVG, but as time has gone on, i don't know...he's not looking so good. our secondary has looked 1,000x better than last year, but our D still seems very vanilla (which is why i think we give up so many yds).

how many times did we see B-dub blitz yesterday. i counted at LEAST 4.

It's kind of old news that Dunta was a little overpaid. That was known from the day he inked the dotted line. But.....the Falcons would be in a world of shit without him, because I don't know if Williams would be up to that job.

And if Williams was up to that job, Owens would be getting abused in the slot on a regular basis.

So....the signing is done...and Dunta is a Falcon.....and that's the way it is going to be.

He is playing pretty much the same as he did last year, probably even better, so anyone who is disappointed was just not clear on what kind of player he is in the first place.

Just ask the Texans how much of a bum he is as i bet they would welcome him back with a red carpet now that their secondary is so horrible without him. We also saw how bad we looked when he was out of the lineup.

I think the point is there is just nothing that can be done about it at this point.

I mean, sure, it's something to talk about, but when the team is rolling like it is now people have a tendency to want to focus on the positive.

As I have learned the hard way lol.

After reading these posts, there is one thing common "We overpaid!". Now we should not presume to tell Arthur Blank how to spend his money. I love the Falcons and am tototally committed to our team but no one in management has asked for a contribution to sign a player.

Maybe we could trade D-Rob and a 2nd round draft choice and bring back Chris Houston.

Swifty, its clear your expectations for Dunta stem from the contract we gave him rather than who he is as a player. I dont agree that his play is "poor" whatsoever.

Peyton made the most lucid comment so far, its over and done. There have been a great deal of people focused on saying he is overpaid. The reality is, that makes no difference at this point. If we wanted to get better at the CB spot, he was the only real option. I am happy that he is on our team and hope he continues to progress in our system to become a better player. He made a couple great plays against TB and made a couple mistakes, thats whats CBs do.

We are 10-2. WE ARE IN THE 4th QUARTER OF OUR SEASON AND FIGHTING FOR HOMEFIELD. It goes right back to the problem I have with quite a bit of the negativity our fanbase is known for; just because you think it MIGHT work does not mean it is worth the risk involved with altering the continuity of a proven success. Proven is the key word here.

Constantly repeating that he is overpaid does not make his play seem worse. We paid market value for the best CB we could get our hands on at the time, period. Get over it.

While DRob is under performing his contract by a long shot, I think our scheme in general needs to be revamped. BVG shows you what he's going to do before the snap and basically dares you to stop it. He rarely disguises his blitzes or coverages, he has the corners playing 4-7 yards off of their receivers on 90% of downs, he rushes 3 men wayyyy too often AND he drops Abe in coverage for fuck's sake. Our defensive theme is built off of speed and BVG plays it like it is some sort of smash mouth D (for the most part). It's the square peg/round hole theory.
