RE: Brian VanGorder has accepted the defensive coordinator job at Auburn University.
I am not shocked by this but am a little worried about the unknown direction we will go on defense.
BVG has put a respectable defense on the field for a few years now. Not the worst overall but certainly not the best. I only hope that whoever our next DC is the results will be as good, or better. I really don't want to see us play musical chairs with coordinators each year and lose the winning culture they have built the four years they have been here. |

Gotta love that Atlanta secrecy. I wonder if the team had already quietly been digging into options. It would fly low on the radar.

Hopefully we get a DC that does not use the zone as much. Dunta is a much much better CB man to man, we will hopefully see him stop playing so far on the snap. I'll be happy to get rid of the soft zone crap

John Chavis from LSU would be a great hire. Would be tough to lure him away but if they win the Championship, maybe TD could convince him to try his hand at the next level. If not, Spags and Tucker are my tops. Tucker had that Jags defense shutting teams down. Spags is good, but I worry that he needs a top DLine. Maybe it's his scheme that gets the DLine playing but he had Strahan, Osi, and Tuck then Quinn and Long. Maybe our DLine is good enough, just poorly utilized.

I haven't even begun to read this thread, although I will tonight, but I had to just give a big hell-yeah. BVG was ok but he wasn't very creative, I'm hoping for much better.
Not sure if there is any fear that with BVG gone they keep MM but I just see no way that they can. That would be completely idiotic. All of this has probably been covered and beaten to death, just excited/surprised, so.... carry on

Also just want to say BVG gets no hard feeling from me. He wasn't the best DC in the world but he wasn't horrible either and he did seem to give a damn. The soft zones were frustrating but they were used when we had no good corners and he never adjusted to Dunta or our secondaries strength. But overall I hope he does well and he will not be on my former Falcon shit list.

That's an interesting thought, and prying assistants away from Les Miles isn't nearly as tough as some might think. |

RE: Brian VanGorder has accepted the defensive coordinator job at Auburn University.
This is a really good thing. I was actually in BVG's corner and thought he bought himself another year with this game. The defense played well all year. But we also got lulled into his mediocrity. This is why I place my trust in TD first and foremost. You can tell BVG was coaxed into accepting the job. For it to have been so sudden and "spur of the moment", he had to have some encouragement. TD doesn't settle. There are some big changes coming to Atlanta. I didn't expect both OC and DC, but it's happening. This is the difference between the Falcons of old and this new regime. They are serious about getting a Super Bowl.
