Coleman likely on his way out after three seasons with Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons likely will release safety Erik Coleman sometime Tuesday, according to a league source.

Coleman signed a four-year contract with the Falcons in 2008 and is due $2.5 million in base salary next season.

Coleman started every game for the Falcons in 2008 and 2009, but he started only once this past this season. He appeared in 12 games and made 20 tackles.

Coleman began his career with the New York Jets in 2004 and immediately became a starter, recording 100-plus tackles in his first three seasons. He had seven interceptions in that span.

he wasnt a bad pick up and served his purpose ..I would have liked to kept him as depth though cause we never know what will happen with Moore or Decoud health wise.

I'm delusional from our playoff loss against GB . Don't take me seriously until year 2413 .

So we are likely trading him? Or are we releasing him? I don't think we should release him, he's got some value, even as a depth guy. He can play at FS and SS so unless we trade him, why dump him?

we cant trade anyone until the CBA is done... TD may need that money to resign some of our players (whose contracts expired) ... I wouldnt be surprised if JA98 was also released

Right, but I just don't see why we would release the guy. Sure, he's making some money. But the guy is legitiment depth. What if DeCoud or Moore get injured? Who are we going to stick in there? Keep him for the final year, let him be a role player, and let him go when the contract is up.

I don't think we release him either. He is a QUALITY back up for both the FS and SS positions. The 2.5 million is a lot for a backup but its more like 1.25 per position and maybe we can use a roster spot somewhere else because he can play both.

TD is not going to ddo this unless they think our backups can step up or have something in mind.

I like EC... I think he gave us great depth.... i wish we could have re did his contract... but who knows... maybe he told the team he want to be a starter some where else(i read a article during the season where he said its hard being a backup but he is a team player) ... IDK.... It looks like the move is being made tho

This makes no sense at all.

Moore is in no way a lock to be healthy for 16(18?) games next season. Why would we NOT keep Coleman around for his final year?

I'd like him to be here next year, but it's probably unlikely if the contract is the issue. Hopefully he really likes it here and resigns for less to stay or something.
