RE: Buzz around NFL is Steven Jackson is coming to Atlanta
I thought somebody made mention of a good idea on AFMB when they said sign Jax and draft Lattimore. Makes sense to me at least especially if we could possibly grab him in the 4th round

SJ would come here for $3.5mil. His career is winding down. He wants to be a contender for once in his career.
Gonzo thought the same way. He wanted to win in the playoffs and have a chance at the SB.

I agree we could get him at or less than 7M, but how much less? I don't think he would take less than 5M. We still have a hand full of our own guys to resign, I don't see how we make a move like this unless TG doesn't come back.

I don't have time to look for the thread, but it's in here somewhere and explains how we can quite easily get $20M or so under the cap and have plenty to re-sign Willie Mo, Tony, several other key guys, and get 1 or 2 decent FA's. Releasing Edwards helped. Releasing Turner would help. Not re-signing Grimes I think. Restructuring Dunta's and doing a new contract for Ryan that spreads his out a bit more.

We're in very good shape with our cap room with just a couple tweeks and moves.

If we make a move like this to me it means that we think our window is closing this year or next. rather than continuing to build for the future like we have been we would be building for 2013, at the expense of the future. signing old vets with 1 or 2 years left just seems to smack of desperation. Fortunately, I don't think we will have the cap room to sign a Freeney or an Osi or a Jackson.

Exactly! It's a move of desperation as would signing Osi or Freeney would be.

3.5 would be more acceptable, though still a bit much, but I really don't think he would go that low.

I'm not against moves of desperation, but I don't think it is healthy to the progress of the team. I'd like to keep developing our young core of players so we can be dominant over the next 5 years or so, not add more vets that will need to be replaced in the next year or two.

I want to try to fully understand how its a move of deseperation and also how this will impact developing a young core of players.

We still have the opportunity to draft a RB this year or next and develop them behind a vet. If you said this was a move to maximize our immediate potential then that would make more sense.

I say that because TG looks like he is coming back and he has a year left obviously. Roddy has a few years left on his contract and is above 30. So if we were maximizing the prime of Roddy, Julio and Matt's growth, and Tony's final bout then yes we are striking now with low cost, big impact FA's. We were 10 yards away from the Super Bowl. I know that S Jax is way more than 10 yards better than Turner.

I'm not being rude but I truly need to understand how it speaks of desperation or how it impedes developing a young core.

getting to 20M is going to be incredibly hard unless we cut Dunta as well

Even then you have Moore and Baker that need to be resigned, add in Steven Jackson and TG and we are pretty much at our breaking point without finding a CB to replace Robinson. Personally I'd let Moore walk and go after a safety in the draft but most people are not a big fan of this idea, but it would allow us to sign a FA. Even with all of that we still didn't address our biggest needs on D. We can add every pro bowl player on O over the age of 30 and we still won't be going anywhere with an aging D that will struggle to maintain their level of play, forget about improving. If we are going to spend any significant money in FA, which I don't think we will, I'd prefer that we spent it on D.

If there is any place I want us to get younger at, its the defense. Some of the integral parts of our defense is older....much more than our offense. The defense isnt going to become great overnight so get young energetic guys in the draft that will grow. Matt Ryan will have the offense sustained which makes it easier to maintain at a good enough level to win but that defense needs to get young quick, not the offense.

Players over 30 or damn near on the defense:
Samuels
Robinson
Abe
Babs
Nicholas

Thats 5 starters. As opposed to our offense:
Roddy
Tony G
Blalock
Clabo

Thats 4 starters. If there is any place we should not get older FA's, then its the defense. Thats almost half the defense and O-lineman generally have longer careers than do D-linemen or corners. Lb's can have long careers.

its a RB, not a QB or a WR, if you are going to get the most value out of a RB it is going to happen in their first few seasons. If we are going to draft a RB this year there is absolutely no need to bring in a FA RB. Not only would you be wasting a pick on a RB but money on a FA as well, all the while the D stands neglected. That doesn't include the 2M in cap we will still lose from cutting Turner.

I view it as a move of desperation because those resources could be much better spent on other players at other positions that are not only a more pressing need but will also continue to provide value well into the future. If we are going to sign a FA RB we would be better of asking Turner to sign a cap friendly contract, he know that he won't get much in FA so he would be inclined to work with us.

When it comes to value and building a winning team FA is absolutely the worst place to find a RB. Take into the fact that you are talking about a RB that will turn 0 before the season starts and has only played a full season 3 times in his career you are just begging to get bit. If we are going to put any money into the offense via FA would would be better off directing it towards the offensive line. If you have a good O line it doesn't matter who you have a RB. We don't need a pro bowler, we just need someone that can get 800+ yards on the ground and 400 yards through the air. RB is arguably the easiest position to hit on late in the draft and they can start day 1 and have an immediate impact.
