(02-03-2011 06:57 PM)Swift Is a Die Hard Wrote:  3 years is def smart ...I love Coach Smith but at this point he doesnt deserve a long term contract 5+ years especially with no playoff wins under our belt.. If things work out as planned and we are still in this so called " PROCESS" then in 3 years when we have some big wins and playoff success both him and TD will be locked up long term but until then why strap yourself with a 5 year deal for a coach ..Makes no sense to do that and especially we dont know whats going to happen , what if we miss out in playoffs next 2 years ..were stuck with a coach that in 5 years has no playoff wins and 3 years left on contract

This contract was solid $ wise and years wise and also puts Smith and TD on notice that yes regular season success is great we are shooting higher

I agree, I also think ... if I may add to what you said, Coach Smith is not a selfish guy. The guy has no agent. I think if there was an agent involved you may have seen a longer deal, however this deal is best for all parties involved. Coach Smith has been rewarded with extended security and more time to work but also the Falcons as an organisation are protected in the event of a serious meltdown from a situation like say what is happening in Denver where they are paying for is it 3 head coaches now. If Smitty's Falcons can start bringing in Post season wins and silverware and the big one then you will see him get locked up. On the TD side of things, I think his extension will allow him time to move away from stabilising and start focusing on impact. That is what he needs to do now. If this team can start having that now then again I think you will see him before his extension runs out be locked up long term. Remember these guys our first timers in their positions. As much as we love them they were not proven commodities, they are however proving themselves to be good for this team and going on to be great. The more that great happens in this extended time they have the more we are going to not just want to keep them but need to keep them.

Given our recent history, I believe three years is exactly right. Blank has probably become cautious. Smith is the type of guy who would agree. If we have three more winning seasons under Smith, then we will lock him up to 2020 most likely.

If we given Smith 3 years extension. We might as well give TD the same contract.

Honestly aside from his 2008 great drafting class. His 2009 and 2010 was mediocre.

In 2008 We got 5 starter out of that class (Ryan, Baker, Lofton, Douglas, and Beerman) Since then we've only have had Peria Jerry, Moore, Spoon and Peters out of the 09 and 2010 drafts.

So Yes TD deserve an extension for his 08 class, but we need more consistency out of him. Just like how coach smith got us a 3 winning seasons, but we need to see some more success in post seasons.

Peria Jerry was a mistake draft pick.
