The "trap game" is an excuse for performing badly in order to minimize the blame, so your ego isn't quite as damaged, which allows you to mentally re-focus more quickly.

It may not have been the whole team. We all know football is a big team sport. All the parts depend on the other so all it takes is a few pieces to mess with chemistry and then it may be difficult to get that chemistry back evenif everybody start to "step up."

Also, I think you may be reading the term trap game wrong. It's not an excuse when I use the term. Its more of the team underestimating the opponent causing a lack of hard work. People get complacent all the time. NFL players and coaches arent immune to that.
