I know we've run similar plays to success in the past, but I hate roll out plays on gotta-have-it downs, and I really hate roll outs to the left (the Ravens game be damned!).

As you've shown, the play creates the needed separation, but inherently adds the added difficulty of a right handed QB trying to throw while moving to his left. It also cuts off half the field.

Oddly enough, Ryan is usually great throwing while moving left. I think he rushed this one though. He didn't set his feet like he did in the Ravens game, and seemed to just wing it. Just one of those throws I am sure Ryan would like to have back.

While the bootleg does cut off half the field, it also allows you to utilize a mobile QB to create passing points that utilize the angles created to put some real hard pressure on a defender. Not only do they have to worry about moving laterally, but depth becomes a serious issues if you know that QB will take off.

Not something that you build an offense around, as it does ultimately limit the field you have to work with and opens up your QB to some nasty shots, but it does keep a defense honest and is generally easy to work with as a QB. Like I said though, Ryan simply didn't execute properly and those few feet ended up costing us 6 points.

Is anyone afraid of the Panthers with 96 yards of field to cover? I know I wouldn't be, and Mike Smith wasn't either.

Point taken. I just would have preferred to be up by at least one more score before leaving points on the field that early in a game.

Against a real team, I believe Mike Smith would have gone with that route.

What he said.
