RE: World Cup?
If I remember correctly, the World Cup was in South Africa, with games played at stadiums through out the country.
Would that be the case with an American World Cup? If that is indeed the case that America is hosting, with games played through out the country, than yeah I could see Atlanta getting a game. The entire enchilada however, that would be like Las Vegas putting in a bid to host the winter Olympics, or the Saints holding a conference on ethics. As Phocis said we don't even have a team. ![]()

Understand Blank didn't say WHEN the World Cup would be here. We have to build the staidum which usually takes 2-3 years but that's only after gaining agreement to get it done. Then we have to establish an MLS team which shouldn't take long, we would probably get that established and hold tryouts during the timespan that it takes the staidum to be built. Then we will put in a bid for the World Cup, this could be upwards of a decade from now. And yes the games will be held throughout the U.S. and not just Atlanta. There are too many games played at the same time and too many teams playing. This is the biggest tournament in the World. It is being held in Brazil this year and it's being played in like 9 different locations in Brazil. Also whichever team's country is hosting the tournament gets an automatic bid. |

RE: World Cup?
As stated before by others:
-International Landing Spot -Pretty Large Population -What will be a beautiful stadium -It would be the US hosting, not just "Atlanta". Meaning other likely stadiums would be places like Cowboys stadium, Lucas Stadium, Georgia Dome, etc.

At the time, there was plenty of laugter and criticism. People thought it was a waste of money. Were it not for our extremely successful airport, Atlanta would be on par with the Kansas City's of the world. Today, Atlanta is a major corporate headquarter and is poised for even greater success. I wouldn't mind seeing a new stadium, but for the price, what will it bring? When will Atlanta citizens get paid back? The final price tag will be over $1billion to build and ATL has agreed to match at least $300mill by creating a new tax. The problem is, people don't want to pay for something that they aren't gonna use. We have a hard enough time getting people to the games. $1billion in road improvements would go further. However, I don't want anyone from ATL overseeing that project. It is clear that the politicians and civic leaders in ATL are crooks and can't manage what they already have. Feel free to watch the news about the public schools or water system.

When I moved out of Atlanta and to Illinois a year ago, the only professional stadiums I had seen were Philips arena, The Georgia Dome, and Turner field. I figure that was how most cities setup their stadiums, relatively close together and pretty much in down town. However, I was very wrong. In Chicago, the United center is about 2 miles outside of downtown Chicago. This would be like moving Philips arena from downtown Atlanta to somewhere between Midtown and Atlanta Station. Wrigley Field is about 5 miles out. With that distance, you could move Turner Field from it's current location to Brookwood. If you we're going from downtown, Lindbergh wouldn't be out of the question. US Cellular Field is about 3.5 miles out, so you're talking about the Virginia Highlands. Soldier Field is about the same distance away from downtown as the United Center, but in a different direction. Just imagine having 3 new venues further out than they currently are in Atlanta. The traffic problem on game days would be much better and I'm willing to bet attendance would be up. Imagine having a campus right around the perimeter. Massive parking lots, restaurants and shops around the stadiums dedicated to Atlanta sports teams. Massive parking nearby, run by the team. It would be a gold mine. But alas, no one involved seems to want this. The Man In Black

Roads are fine, will not be the long term answer. I have nurtured a long time concern over education , but I believe that we will see a major revolution in that field soon. With the advent of the Khan Academy, education will see some very drastic changes. The great thing about these changes is that education will actually become more cost effective. Given the horific situation in Clayton county, I would begin there. Once the turn around in Clayton becomes publicized, the rest of the city will follow suit. Atlanta must concentrate on its core infrastructure. Water, energy, local food and public transportation. Once that is handled, security and living experience should be addressed. City planners should structure the city to please women. In doing so, we will see more museums, fountains, park spaces, shopping avenues, cafes and pedestrians. This city has the potential to become a major global player. Proper planning and focus is key. |
