A new #2 RB's most important role would be....
One thing we haven't agreed on(among many haha) is what would be the primary role of a new RB on this team. Of course, the end result should be a healthy combination of both. But which is more important to our offense IYO? If you HAVE to take "Mark Ingram"* (workhorse RB, but not a receiver) or "Noel Devine"* (can catch and hit the HR but shouldn't have more than 7 carries), who ya got? Any other thoughts on this position and its role in our offense would be appreciated.

Noel Devine. we need someone thats fast, a Ray Rice clone. Someone that Ryan can always check down and knowing we can squeeze a 3-5 yards out of that play.

I think a little bit of both or all of both. A faster version of Snelling if you will. There are always those kinds of players out there in the draft. We should be able to dig one up in the draft.

He has that checkdown in Jason Snelling. Only issue is those 3-5 yards are all you'll ever get with him. Noel Devine is nowhere near Ray Rice in terms of rushing ability IMO. Ray Rice would be perfect for us because of his ability to do both. But in terms of that analogy, I'm talking about picking opposites. (as prospects) Back A: A- rushing ability, C- receiving threat Back B: C- rushing ability, A- receiving threat Who ya got? We need someone faster than Jason Snelling. I love Snelling but we need someone that has more speed/elusive, someone that cause a match up problems. Other team LBs can easy match up with Snelling and Turner in term of screening plays and shut them down for no more than a 5-10 yards gain. If we can get Noel and speedy WR...

RE: A new #2 RB's most important role would be....
We're looking for our Reggie Bush. It's as simple as that. Now obviously the odds of finding someone of that caliber are extremely slim, but these are the attributes we need as close as possible of course.
Someone who when they line up in the backfield, the opposing defense has gone from only having to guess, "run up the middle" or "5-10 yard pass", to having to guess, "pitch to outside edges", "reverse", "cover the RB in motion to the flats", "screen", "draw & dump pass", or "5-10 yard pass". Obviously, when you add those possibilities, the percentage of accuracy for a defense guessing where to cover goes down considerably compared to the pretty much 50/50 shot they have against us now. And then we add a couple ultra-fast speed receivers to the mix who can pull the safeties & corners out of that 5-10 yard zone, & everything is finally spread out for us. |

RE: A new #2 RB's most important role would be....
I agree with the faster Snelling comment.
We need a guy who can run AND catch. It's not that one skill is needed, it's that the threat of both the run and the pass need to be there to keep defenses honest. I'll take a B pass catcher/B runner (Ray Rice) over an A pass catcher C runner (Reggie Bush) or a C pass catcher/A runner (Turner light). You hope the guys ends up being A/A like MJD. We need an everydown back who can fill in on 3rd downs also. If I had to choose between scatback and pure runner, I'd go scatback, but that gets back to letting defenses know what we're going to do. We need the versatility that says "if you put 8 in the box, this guy's going out for a pass, but if you put 6 in the box, he's going to jam it down your throat." Otherwise, we're just looking for Norwood with fewer injuries. |

With all the talk of Turner slowing down and whatnot, I figured there would be at least a couple votes for the first option, but I agree. Question is will there be a B/B type prospect available for us. "The Lord say in your heart you should bare no hate/ But I flip the world a Dirty Bird, I aint no saint"- Kaedus |
