3-4 Defense --- My Wish For 2011
I know the Falcons aren't fully capable of running the 3-4 without an earth mover at NT. But I really wish they would make this move. 5 of the top 6 defenses this season ran the 34. As a defense, you can just do so much more than you can with a 43 base. The bottom line is, the offense never knows where the 5th rusher is coming from. With the 43, it's hog on hog. But the 34 naturally creates mismatches.
I dream of the day when Atlanta has a ferocious 34 defense like the Steelers, Ravens, and Jets. |

With Wade Phillips running it? Just a name to throw out there. And I know that Biermann would make a beast of an OLB and JA98 would be perfect as a DE

One word: PERSONNEL. On paper, BeerMan, JA98, and Lofton fit, but what about the rest of our front 7. Abe? No. Babs? No. Spoon? Ehh, not really sure. Etc. For the record, I want a 34. But I want a superbowl in the next couple years more.

RE: 3-4 Defense --- My Wish For 2011
I just realized that the Packers have only been in a 34 for TWO years. Maybe it doesn't take that much to make that change after all....

I think they timed their change very well, having more pieces already on the team at that point and also being in position to draft well for it, Clay and BJ etc. They may also have had a DC change, not sure on that one though. My point is though, that i think they had one of the quickest and most successful switches to a 34 D in recent years at least. Its something I'd like to see, but I really don't think it'll happen any time soon, or maybe even ever with this coaching staff (not a dig at any coaches). Although having to put up with people complaining about how we would then suck and should've stayed 43, while being the ones most vocial about going 34 in the first place, would completely do my head in. I highly doubt it happens with Mike Smith as our head man. If we can learn how to wrap up next season I think we will be just fine.

He didn't fit into the Jets' 3-4 conversion and was delt here. Babs, Jerry and Peters would work well as DE's. Spoon is a question mark, but might work as an OLB. We are literally very close to having the personnel to switch to the 3-4. With BVG calling so many three man fronts, I felt like we were toying with it this season. Smitty is a pretty sharp guy. He doesn't flaunt it, but he knows what works. He describes his preferred defense as a "hybrid". I really don't know what he means, but maybe he wants to be able to run both sets. To run an effective 3-4, we need a big DT to anchor the middle. Trey Lewis could have been that guy, but his knees are shot. Drafting a big man, like Powe, out of Mississippi, might do the trick. |

That my friend, is the key. They brought in Dom Capers, aka the best 34 Coordinator/Coach not named LeBeau.
