I think you've misread this. My understanding is that the NFLPA took the issue off the table unilaterally. That's a hardening of their stance, not a compromise.

like I said on the rookie wage scale issue - we are no closer to a deal until the $$$$ is agreed on - these other issues are trivial and can be agreed on quickly.

RE: 18 Game Schedule off the table!
Smith said the NFL has never even made a formal proposal for the 18 game schedule. The NFL agreed to only ask for an additional 800 million, instead of the full billion, but Smith still wants that number lower pending whatever financial information they claim they haven't been given.

I hope they can compromise around $1.5-1.6 billion.

Yeah, I think the owners have no intention of giving the players the audited financial statements - more than likely if players saw them they would see that owners are doing better than they claim.

To avoid lockout and handing over the financials, the owners are going to have to probably come down from asking the players to exempt an additional $800 million to probably $400 million - like you said, mdrake.

I'm guessing at the end of the day the final solution will go something like this:

9 billion pie/year
$1.4 billion/yr in revenues exempted for owners
remaining $7.6 billion/yr in revenues to be split as follows:
50/50 between owners/players

bottom-line, owners wanted to exempt $2 billion/yr for expenses but gave conceded $600 million less than what they wanted - they got 40% of what they wanted. I'm sure the owners who are all savvy businessmen know you never get what you want in a negotiation and the $2 billion for expenses was just a "jumping off" point - they probably would have been happy with $1.6 billion but settle for $1.4 billion. If players decertify and this thing goes to court, everybody loses and owners will spend probably half of the $200 million extra they are trying to get in legal fees and lost revenue plus lost goodwill with the fans. Owners will lose in court as well as the judge is a "pro union guy"

Players lose $400 million overall from where the current CBA is, but frankly they got too much on the last deal anyway and I think they know that. This thing should get done and players get their workout bonuses, etc and football goes on Smile

No 18 game skedule
3 pre-season games
Rookie Wage Scale

Done!!!!!Big Grin

The Owners never actually asked for an 18 game schedule. The NFLPA made it clear that it wasn't going to happen, at which point, the owners agreed with that stance, and the entire topic has been cleared from talks. Basically, they didn't ask for it, but they were thinking about it, and the owners folded on it instead of going anywhere with it and now it's not being discussed at all. So it's actually good news.

No, he read it right. The 18 game schedule is off the table and is no longer part of the negotiations.

I was on the fence... I think 16 games is right and keeps the record books in tact.

I know we added two games in 78 (from 14 to 16) but that seemed more legitimate then.

Let's just get some football in on time!
