Good Luck Michael Vick

Most of you will slam me for this but I’m use to it.

I’m glad the commish reinstated Vick but cut the Bull**** already. He did his time and should be allowed to start week 1. If we didn’t have Ryan I would take Vick back in a minute. He has gone 2 years without playing so that means he hasn’t been hit so he’s healthy. I really don’t think he will miss a beat. Also don’t even worry about what Peta has to say about anything. They act like there so perfect. And with Tony Dungy in his corner he’ll be fine…

Sack expectations: Playing LDE vs RDE (they are different positions folks)

Playing RDE, you play what is known as the “weak” side and get to rush the QB from his blindside so he can see you coming. Playng LDE, you play the “strong” side and typically have the TE as an additional blocker and face much more mass coming at you over a season. The prototypical RDE has a different build and skill set than the prototypical LDE. For instance, John Abraham would never make it through a full year starting at LDE, he’s not built for it. He can play there in certain matchups, but I’m talking about starting there.

For the record, out of 64 starting DEs in 2008 , only 7 had more than 10 sacks in the regular season and only 2 of them were LDEs..

John Abraham RDE
Dwight Freeny RDE
Jared Allen RDE
Julieus Peppers RDE
Mario Williams RDE

Justin Tuck LDE
Robert Mathis LDE

This does not compare, but instead **contrasts** the two positions. Please stop comparing the sack stats of LDEs with RDEs. They are not the same position.

For the record, if JA98 gets around 6-7 sacks this year while moving inside often on 3rd down , and if he plays excellent run defense and is in the backfield disrupting running and passing plays, flushing the QB out, getting QB hits, I’m sure he will have had a very successful season to the front office, coaches ,his teammates and many of the reasonable, informed objective fans that understand the considerable difference between playing LE and RDE

The Bush/Norwood debate…

Deconstructing Reggie Bush & Jerious Norwood

Figured during this down time, everyone might appreciate a good debate. This is from the Saints Scout.com Forum…a little ’state your case’ goings on where I think Jerious would be proud.

Have fun. If you go over there, be respectful.

Falcons Close to Signing First-Round Pick Peria Jerry

Peria Jerry[Update July 30, 2009]: Peria Jerry has signed with the Falcons. The financial terms were not disclosed, but the contract was reported as being a five-year deal.

Peria Jerry was a driving force in making the University of Mississippi’s run defense the fourth best in the country in 2008. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Jerry is on the verge of signing with the Falcons, instantly upgrading their shaky defensive line.

The Falcons and first-round pick Peria Jerry are expected to reach a contract agreement later Thursday, according to his agent James “Bus”Cook.

Jerry has made it a point since the draft to show that he wanted to sign prior to training camp. If the deal gets done today, he’ll make it just in the nick of time as camp opens Saturday morning August 1st.

Jerry will be the eighth and final draft choice by the Falcons to sign. And he’ll enter camp with an opportunity to make an impact from day one. With the departure of Grady Jackson, Jerry and third-year defensive tackle, Trey Lewis, will battle for the starting job.

While most feel the amazing work ethic Jerry showed at Mississippi combined with his first-round status almost makes him a lock for the job. But don’t count Lewis out just yet. He’s young and healthy again after missing the 2008 season recovering from two knee surgeries, and has two things going for him that Jerry does not; size and experience. At 320, Lewis outweighs Jerry by 21 pounds, which could be a big deal as Jonathan Babineaux, the Falcons other defensive tackle, is also on the light side at 284.

This will be a fun and heated battle to watch as training camp begins. It’s great for the Falcons and Jerry that he’ll be around from day one.

Introduction

Hello and let me introduce myself, I will be going by De-cleater. I’ve lurked about for years and decided to finally interject on a topic or two.
No fancy avatars or window dressing, but I am a Falcon fan who enjoys reading about the team and learning a thing or two. I’m also not opposed to a spirited debate every once in awhile. I hope to contribute from time to time, I’ve enjoyed reading the majority of the posts on here for the past several years and appreciate the info that most of you provide. Thanks

A TDWII Observation: The Roddy White Situation

While both sides still remain on amicable terms and have not gone to the media with any grievances, it could be a while before White is signed to a long term deal, if it happens at all. You see, the Patriot Way has been ruthless in these types of situations before. Ex-Falcon Lawyer Milloy can vouch to that.

Milloy was a key leader on a team that unexpectedly won a Super Bowl after the 2001 season. So integral was he to that teams success that he was one of 3 Patriots to help narrate NFL Films Award Winning Super Bowl Series; America’s Game for that 2001 team. On the eve of the 2003 season, he was unceremoniously released. Just like that. Oh sure, the primary hang-up was money, but this was Lawyer Milloy we were talking about. Heart & soul of the Patriots defense and team leader. Indispensable, right?

What did Bill Belichick have to say about it? “This is a player and person I have immense respect for, and he meant a lot to this team and organization. Unfortunately he’s a casualty of the system. The timing is not good. We tried to find a way to make it work. In the end, we weren’t able to get to that point.” Just like that. This isn’t to say the Falcons and White are anywhere close to this conclusion. It’s just that this conclusion can and has occurred.

So, 6 years later, a protégé of the Patriot Way now lords over the Falcons operation. And this is what he sees in Roddy White.

• Emerging all around threat.
• Developing chemistry with franchise QB, Matt Ryan
• Will be 28 in November
• A player who has only produced at this level for 2 seasons.

This is what he sees as far as the surrounding situation.

• Looming labor trouble could delay White’s foray into free agency one more season. Even if labor trouble is avoided, the Falcons have the franchise tag
• What this means is that when White makes it to FA, he’ll be doing so around 30.
• Michael Jenkins a nice #2 WR is locked up long term and a very enticing Harry Douglas also in the mix. Throw Tony Gonzalez into the mix for say the next 3 years, and the Falcons have a surplus of pass catching talent.
• With Matt Ryan, he sees a QB capable of taking advantage of a diverse set of weapons versus overly relying on one.

Listen…the Falcons don’t want to lose Roddy White. But at this point, why make a deal with White unless it’s advantageous to the Falcons. White’s leverage would be to hold out. Whether that would force the Falcons had? Well, Dimitroff comes from an organization that released a Super Bowl winning team and defensive leader days before the start of the season. In an environment like that, you learn not to blink. Plus, how many times do you hear about contract squabbles or trouble coming out of New England? Not many.

So if Dimitroff and White are headed for a stand-off, and let’s also state, we’re not sure if they would be…this would be its first real test. Sure, the team first attitude and building through the draft philosophies are hallmarks of the Patriot Way. But if you look back, it’s how the Patriots deal with adversity in the face of success that really defines why they’ve become the model franchise in the NFL. Staying true to ones core principles can be difficult, especially in the face of harsh criticism.

It was all Belichick could do to walk through his own locker room in the days after Milloy’s release. They were spanked 31-0 in their first game against Milloy’s new team, the Buffalo Bills. 5 months later, they were hoisting another Lombardi trophy, the second of three.

Last season, they lost Tom Brady, the foundational building block of the franchise and perhaps the NFL minutes into the season. Plugging in a QB who hadn’t started since high school, they narrowly missed the playoffs, but still compiling a gaudy 11-5 record.

Allowing White to flap in the wind might not be a move perceived well publicly, especially if White were to hold out. But if the Patriot Way is truly being implemented in Flowery Branch, it shouldn’t alter ‘the course of action’ at all. That could produce tension between the Falcons star WR and the Falcons wunderkind GM and the Falcons Way first real test.

Searching for hidden rookie gems as team training camps open

Atlanta — Lawrence Sidbury Jr. (4th round, 125th overall)

The Falcons are pretty set along the defensive line, but when Sidbury fell to them in the fourth round, it was impossible not to take him. It may be equally impossible to keep him off the field.

Though he hails from Division I-AA Richmond and is undersized, Sidbury already is turning heads with consistent playmaking skills. He’s always around the ball and in the backfield disrupting things. He never quits and when he gets to the ball-carrier, he’s a sure tackler. He may not start, but it will be impossible for the Falcons not to use him.
