Link

In terms of predicting success, 11 seems to be magic number

By Pat Kirwan NFL.com

Whether your favorite team is an extension of the West Coast offense or some variation of the East Coast offense — if there is such a thing — the truth is that teams use multiple personnel groups throughout each and every game.

I frequently get asked if there’s one personnel group that causes more problems for defenses. While the personnel grouping that puts the best players on the field is any team’s top option, I prefer one over all others. It’s no coincidence that the teams with this personnel group are winning.

Most teams code personnel groups with a numbering system (which I describe in detail in my new book “Take Your Eye Off the Ball”). It’s a two-digit system that declares the number of running backs first and the number of tight ends in the game second. For example 21 personnel means there are two running backs and one tight end on the field, but it also indicates that with two more eligible receivers allowed, there are two wide receivers in the game. Another example is 22 personnel (two running backs, two tight ends and one wide receiver). There can be upwards of 15 different personnel groups used in today’s game.

Now that there’s an understanding of the personnel coding system, the number one personnel grouping that the best teams strive to develop and employ to create problems is 11 personnel (one running back, one tight end and three wide receivers). The Colts used 11 personnel well over 500 times last season, the Vikings over 350 times, and the Packers, Patriots, Cowboys, Saints and Bengals were all in the 200-plus range. Six of those teams won their respective division and the Packers were a close second.

Get ready for the Ravens to go from about 150 snaps of 11 personnel to upwards of 300 this season with the roster they’ve built. So, what does it take to be a good 11 personnel team?

1. A quarterback with a strong arm who would much rather spread out his offense to expose what the defense is doing and identify the blitzers are right away. In surveying many quarterbacks this summer and asking them what protection scheme they preferred, five-man protections with five receivers in patterns won out.

As Aaron Rodgers said, “I’d rather see the blitzer and take care of him myself than leave a blocker in to pick him up.”

Matt Ryan agreed and added, “Spreading out the offense gives some very good running opportunities as well.”

Eleven personnel can give the QB all the classic conflicts that drive a defense crazy.

2. A flex tight end who can line up next to a tackle on one play and in the slot or outside on the next play. Dallas Clark is the prototypical flex tight end. Many teams interested in this personnel grouping have traded for or used a high draft pick on this type of player.

The best 11 personnel teams have a tight end that catches between 50 and 100 balls a year and is a willing blocker when asked to do some dirty work. Atlanta’s Tony Gonzalez, Dallas’ Jason Witten, San Francisco’s Vernon Davis and Minnesota’s Visanthe Shiancoe all fit the bill.

3. An X receiver who forces teams to use some form of rolled coverage, or at least man and half coverage to this dangerous player. Think of New England’s Randy Moss, Houston’s Andre Johnson, Indianapolis’ Reggie Wayne, New Orleans’ Marques Colston, Minnesota’s Sidney Rice (when healthy) and Atlanta’s Roddy White.

4. A super-quick slot receiver. This player is much more dangerous than a fullback, who typically comes out of the game for the slot receiver when a team switches from 21 to 11 personnel.
The Falcons didn’t use their 11 personnel as much last season when Harry Douglas was injured, but he’s healthy again and you will see a significant increase. Wes Welker is the prototypical slot guy and keeps coverage off Moss while offering Tom Brady a quality target. Welker had a league-high 123 receptions a year ago, mostly from the slot. Anquan Boldin or T.J. Houshmandzadeh suddenly makes the Ravens extremely dangerous at this position. Percy Harvin might be the biggest threat

5. A Z receiver, usually lining up wide on the same side as the tight end, that can open the field up with his speed and take the “top off the defense.” Minnesota’s Bernard Berrian is a good example as well as Robert Meachem down in New Orleans.

6. A running back that is a threat as a runner and receiver. Ray Rice led the NFL in receptions among running backs last year with 78 catches, and now the Ravens have Boldin and Houshmandzadeh to go along with old reliable Derrick Mason as well as tight end Todd Heap. That could be the hottest 11 personnel team in the league.

Adrian Peterson caught 43 balls a year ago and the plan is to up his production. Coupled with Harvin, Berrian, Shiancoe and a healthy Rice, that’s a solid grouping.

If teams use their 11 personnel on first and second down, it becomes a simple read for the QB as to run or pass. The X and slot receiver frequently demand three defenders on good 11 personnel teams. On the other side, if the flex tight end and the Z receiver also demand three defenders or at least 2 ½, as they often do, then that means there are five defenders in the box, all of which can be accounted for by the offensive line, leaving a run as a very effective call.

The best teams in the league will also be excellent 11 personnel squads.

Top teams at running the 11 personnel

9. Atlanta
Ryan
Gonzalez
White, Douglas, Jenkins
Turner

If Rice was healthy, the Vikings would be up in the top three. If Vincent Jackson ever shows up in San Diego, the Chargers will easily be a top 10 team.

The Cardinals dropped out from my 2009 list because of Kurt Warner’s retirement and loss of Boldin.

The Giants and Eagles are knocking on the door. The Jets also have a chance later in the year when Santonio Holmes returns from suspension and teams up with Braylon Edwards, Dustin Keller, Jerricho Cotchery and LaDainian Tomlinson.

The Steelers might have been on the list if Ben Roethlisberger wasn’t suspended and Holmes was still on the roster.

As you watch the season unfold, keep an eye on how often your favorite team is in 11 personnel and how effectively the offense moves down the field with the pass or the run.

The Falcons are rated the third best team in the NFL – as of yesterday (Sep. 7) in the opinion of Pete Prisco of CBS Sports.com.

List: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/13897416/nfl-power-rankings-start-of-a-silverblack-revival

OK, I’m well aware that the ranking and $4.50 will get you a latte at Starbucks. All rankings like Prisco’s are simply a way for a sportswriter to fill an article and a deadline, with no real significance. However, at least at the beginning of this season one noted sportswriter of a fairly prominent media outlet has come out saying he thinks highly of the Falcons. Why not just say “thank you” and accept it for what it is? Instead, many posters seem to receive a perverse satisfaction in denouncing this ranking as “too high”, “not realistic”, and with even more graphic phases.

A significant percentage of posters on this board have what I would describe as a “loser’s mentality”. They have become so conditioned to seeing the Falcons in the lower half of the standings that today they really can’t conceive of the Falcons being anything other than second rate. To them, the future is a horror.

Yes, the Atlanta Falcons’ history is, to put it kindly, not quite as storied as some other franchises in the NFL, but what’s past is past. There isn’t a game this 2010 season I am willing to concede to any of the Falcons’ opponents.

How many of you smirked after reading that last sentence? Do you believe this season’s Falcons don’t stand a chance when they meet the Saints, the Niners, the Ravens, the Packers, or some other team on the schedule? Yes, the Falcons will almost undoubtedly lose some of their games – every team since the 1971 Dolphins have. However, none of these possible losses are preordained.

Prisco’s #3 ranking is too high? If you think of yourself as a Falcons fan, if not for the “loser’s mentality” why would you hold so? After all, any of the other teams that are lower on Prisco’s list which you would rank higher have their own issues.

MVP: Peyton Manning, Colts. He won it last season, and this Colts team is even better. What’s to think Manning is going to regress? It’s his award to lose.

Coach of the Year: Mike Smith, Falcons. The players love him, but he also can be a stern disciplinarian. The Falcons will be much improved and could push for the Super Bowl. I think they win the division, which could earn Smith this award just by doing that.

Aaron Rodgers looks for another 4K passing season. (Getty Images)
Offensive Player of the Year: Aaron Rodgers, QB, Packers. He will put up some amazing numbers in their pass-happy offense. Brett who? He’s going for a third consecutive 4,000-yard season.

Defensive Player of the Year: DeMarcus Ware, OLB, Cowboys. He will get 17 sacks — at least — this season. The guy is a force off the edge. He’s the premier speed rusher from the 3-4 defense. Now that he has help on the other side, he will be even better.

Offensive Rookie of the Year: C.J. Spiller, RB, Bills. He’s the next Chris Johnson. Like Johnson, he has explosive speed. That’s the way of the modern NFL back.

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Brandon Graham, DE, Eagles. This kid plays with a relentless style. Having Trent Cole on the other side will help. They can’t double them all. He will have double-digit sacks as a rookie to win this award.

Comeback Player of the Year: Jason Campbell, QB, Raiders. He will flourish now that he’s out of Washington. The Raiders will rejuvenate his career, just like they did for Jim Plunkett.

Step-back Player: Brett Favre, QB, Vikings. I just can’t see him coming close to doing what he did in 2009. What he did was a shock to those of us who doubted him. I play the age percentages here.

Team on the rise: Raiders. I like the talent on that roster and I think Campbell will really help the offense. Watch for Darren McFadden this season.

Team on the decline: Cardinals. I just don’t like the quarterback situation. Derek Anderson doesn’t do much for me.

Best free-agent pickup: Dunta Robinson, CB, Falcons. He gives them a legitimate corner in the secondary. He can play man, which the Falcons have lacked. He will help the pass rush with his cover skills.

Worst free-agent pickup: That’s easy. It’s Antonio Bryant. Heck, the Bengals already released him. So for another option, try Bears RB Chester Taylor. Why do they need him with Matt Forte?

Prisco’s 2010 Predicted Order of Finish

Happy Birthday to Kroy Biermann this Sunday. Looks like the Falcons defensive end, once an obscure player from Montana, will get an NFL start on his birthday in Pittsburgh.

Biermann, who will be 25, better run fast and stay mobile because the Steelers are going to trot out a quarterback much different from Ben Roethlisberger. Dennis Dixon, the former Oregon quarterback, can fly around the field.

Dixon, for now, runs better than he passes. He is a third-to-fourth string quarterback and has completed 13 of 27 passes in his career. This is his third NFL season.

Dixon completed 6 of 7 against the Lions in the preseason, then 7 of 8 vs. the Giants.

The Steelers Fan Base is from what I have seen 97% certain they will easily win this game against Our Fighter Falcons this Sunday. I’m calling for you pessimist and glass half-Full punks to step and remove all doubt as to the ability of our players and most importantly our QB who has a relentless attitude toward preparation and determination to win at all cost. I’m sure this may come across as a rant but I assure you its just guided confidence in what we have brewing though-out this organization. As a whole I honestly believe the Players on this team know they can win and should do just that. There is nothing wrong with being realistic but just being a plain old negative Nancy is beyond unacceptable. I have like three Steelers fans in my squadron at work and they all are laughing at the very possible reality of the Falcons coming to town and wiping their rear-end with a terrible towel. This is the time to enjoy our team because they will only get better. If you feel like me than you know we have suffered enough in the past, CHEERS to a joyous occasion and a great 300-like Spartan beat down on these arrogant ( insert bad word )….. this Sunday. P.S from all the way in Korea serving in the Military I will be up with the 3am crew. RISE UP ; ) It’s Time !!!!!
